The shift lock feature works the same in both generations. Actually, all Honda shift locks work the same way. A lot of older Accords have this problem where it won't allow the key to come out because the shift position is not in "P" , although the shifter is indeed in Park.When the shifter is stuck in Park, there is a "shift lock release" mechanism on the top, left corner of the shifter assembly (see image below). Use a small, flat-blade tool to remove the shift lock cover.
